Gate.io Review: Fees, Asset Coverage and Security

Gate.io at a glance

Affiliate disclosure: Gate.io is an affiliate partner of Investory Spot. If you open an account through our link, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. This does not change the fees you pay, and it did not influence the assessment in this review. Availability of the exchange and its products depends on your country of residence, and Gate does not accept customers from every jurisdiction.

Gate.io is a large exchange that has built its reputation on listing volume. It consistently carries more assets than any of the major tier-one venues, which makes it the exchange of choice for anyone who needs early access to a newly launched token. The trade-off is that a long list means a larger share of thinly traded, unproven projects, and the exchange has had to remove listings in the past.

Liquidity on Gate.io is strong for major pairs but thinner on the long tail, where spreads widen quickly.

Fees

Standard spot trading is 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker on the global platform. Perpetual futures are among the cheapest at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker, which puts Gate.io ahead of several larger rivals on derivatives cost. Holding GT and paying fees with it reduces the rate by around 10%. Fee tiers run from VIP 0 to VIP 16 and move on a combination of 30-day volume and GT holdings.

Gate US is a separate, regulated American entity. Its fees are considerably higher: a standard VIP 0 spot taker fee sits at 0.38%, well above the global schedule. US users should treat the two products as distinct venues.

Asset coverage

This is Gate.io’s main draw. The exchange lists well over a thousand tokens, frequently including projects on other platforms are still waiting to list. That reach also drives listings of questionable projects, so treat the size of the list as a feature and a warning at the same time.

Security and regulation

Gate.io publishes proof of reserves with Merkle tree verification, a standard that has become an expectation among larger venues. It supports 2FA and device confirmation. The platform has faced regulatory attention in several jurisdictions and its availability varies accordingly. It holds registrations in several areas and has pursued licensing, but the regulatory picture is less settled than the tier-one exchanges.

Pros

  • Very competitive perpetual futures fees at 0.05% taker
  • Among the widest asset lists available, with early listings
  • Proof of reserves with Merkle tree verification
  • Wide range of VIP levels with token holding discounts

Cons

  • Higher fees on the separate Gate US entity
  • Thin liquidity on long-tail assets widens spreads
  • Some listed projects are low-quality or high-risk
  • Less settled regulatory position than tier-one venues

Who Gate.io suits

Gate.io suits traders hunting for new listings who accept that not everything on the platform is well-regarded. It is also a solid choice if you trade perpetuals and want to keep costs down. It is a weaker fit if you want a curated list, tight spreads on smaller assets, or the strongest possible regulatory clarity.

Verdict

Gate.io earns its place through breadth and cheap derivatives trading. It is a discovery platform as much as a trading venue. Pair it with a more conservative exchange for long-term holdings rather than treating it as a single home for your portfolio.

Opening a Gate.io account

If Gate.io suits how you trade, you can open a Gate.io account here. Note that the link above goes to the global Gate platform. US-based traders need Gate US instead, which is a separately regulated entity with a much higher spot fee of 0.38% at the standard tier, so the pricing in this review does not apply to them.

Before you commit, compare it against the other venues on our exchanges page. On derivatives Gate.io is currently the cheapest of the four on taker fees, but spot pricing is level across all of them at 0.10%, so the deciding factor is usually how much of the asset list you actually need.

Fee figures reflect published schedules at the time of writing and change frequently. Verify current rates on the exchange before trading. This review is for information only and is not investment advice.
